Brighton 0-1 Southampton: Three match takeaways – 28/08/18
By Chris Hughes
Yesterday evening Southampton finally got their first win of the season at the fourth attempt, beating Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
The result sees the Saints through to the third round of the competition, having previously been knocked out by Wolves before reaching that stage last season.
Charlie Austin came off of the bench to score the only goal of the game, when fellow substitute Nathan Redmond sent a teasing ball into his teammate who rose to head home.
Despite a relative lack of chances outside of Elyounoussi’s shot and Armstrong’s effort in the first 45, the Saints were to seen to have played well having again experimented – this time going with a four-man defence and just the one striker from the off.
The success of the formation means we may see it stay for the meeting with Crystal Palace this coming weekend – the last Southampton fixture before the first international break of the season.
The Saints will therefore hope to take the confidence and momentum gained from yesterday’s win into the game against the Eagles, in order to get their first win in the league and send them into that fortnight off in high spirits.
But what three talking points can be discussed now point match?
