Goalkeeper and Defenders

Alex McCarthy – Goalkeeper – 7.5

For the most part the Brighton match proved why McCarthy is the number one at the club. The keeper pulled off a couple of top class saves, including tipping one over from close range.

Unfortunately, for the England hopeful one crucial mistake cost him. After Brighton pumped the ball into the box from a free kick, McCarthy failed to come for the ball. This left Jannik Vestergaard to mark two onrushing attackers, one of whom headed the ball home.

Cédric Soares -Right-back – 5

While this was far from Cédric worst game in a Saints shirt, there wasn’t anything memorable about it either. The right back was beaten on a couple of occasions during his defensive duties and didn’t offer all that much going forward.

Jannik Vestergaard – Centre-back – 6

After being given a quiet first half by a lackluster Seagulls attack, Vestergaard was part of an altogether shakier back-line in the second. The Dane was left high and dry for Brighton’s first goal, being forced to mark two opposing players, with no assistance in sight.

The international star was part of a unit, who never look fully in control of the box.

Wesley Hoedt – Centre-back – 6

As a defender, if your team concedes two in the space of 25 minutes to draw a game you should have won, then you can be sure you won’t be getting man of the match. Apart from the game changing set pieces, the Saints back-line did just enough to keep the attackers at bay without looking secure.

Ryan Bertrand -Left-back – 6

The left back did nothing particularly wrong, but save for one or two good runs, and a well struck last-minute free kick it was a forgettable night.
