Southampton surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Brighton on Monday evening despite a largely impressive performance.
A stunning strike from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave Southampton a deserved half-time lead at St Mary’s, and Danny Ings’ third goal of the season from the penalty spot put them in control.
However, a free set-piece header for Shane Duffy just two minutes later provided a route back into the contest for the away side, and they would equalise in injury time through a Glenn Murray spot-kick.
It was something of a shame for Saints and Mark Hughes, who produced one of the most lively first-halves that St Mary’s has seen for a while.
A mixture of poor game management and bad defending was their undoing though, and lessons will have to be learned before a tough test against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.
