Yesterday afternoon Southampton fell to another defeat, this time at the hands of promoted side Wolves, who scored two second-half goals en-route to victory.
It means that just seven games into the campaign we can say we’ve seen the Saints lose back-to-back games on multiple occasions – a worrying statistic for the season ahead. Despite the slight resurgence in the week leading up to the international break, Southampton still only have one league win to their name this campaign.
And the fixtures don’t get any easier from here – with 11 games left before the reverse fixtures begin, the Saints still have to face all the rest of the big six after Liverpool, as they once again get hit with a tricky festive period.
Mark Hughes stuck with much of the team which he’s used this season in the game yesterday meaning we saw Wesley Hoedt remain at the back, a decision which has continued to divide the crowd.
Lapse defending was the cause for both of the home side’s goals, with Ivan Cavaliero and Jonny both scoring from deep inside the box.
Next up for the Saints is a midweek cup match against Everton before the small task of facing Chelsea next weekend. So, on that note, what takeaways can be drawn from the defeat yesterday afternoon?
