Yesterday evening Southampton secured their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a penalty shootout victory against Marco Silva’s Everton.

The match should really of been done and dusted in the first 90, after Danny Ings put the Saints ahead just before half-time with his fourth goal of the season. A late strike from Theo Walcott however gave the home side a route back into the game, forcing it to penalties.

However, both Everton players who struck against the Saints when the two teams met in the league in August failed to convert their spot-kicks, with only Matt Targett getting his penalty saved for Southampton.

The result is just the Saints’ third victory of the season having beaten Brighton to get to the third round whilst also dispatching of a Zaha-less Crystal Palace in the league just over a month ago.

Mark Hughes will hope that the win can provide an injection of confidence going into the coming weeks, as after the game against Chelsea this weekend they have to face both Bournemouth and Newcastle – both of those matches are winnable.

But looking back to yesterday, which three Saints stood above the rest?
