Southampton kept a clean sheet for the first time in a Premier League game since their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on September 1st.  Most impressively, securing a point in the nil-nil draw against a Bournemouth side having little trouble scoring at home.

The Saints had three clear chances to win the game, but should be happy with a point away from home.  Charlie Austin, Stuart Armstrong, and Manolo Gabbiadini will all be upset to have not found the back of the net.  However, the story for Southampton will be the improved pressing tactics that led to a strong defensive performance for the first time since September 1st.

Jack Stephens got a rare start at centre-back alongside Wesley Hoedt in a 4-4-2 formation and did not disappoint.  The pairing limited Bournemouth to just a two shots on target.

Mario Lemina unfortunately limped off midway through the second half following an apparent knee injury, upsetting the powerful partnership he is forming with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.  The latter continues to be a threat from distance, volleying two separate attempts on net while forcing Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begovic into tough saves.

The result has to be a confidence boost for a Southampton side who have conceded ten times in their last four Premier League games.  Although the problem could be turning to the attack that has failed to score in the same run of matches.

A critical date with Newcastle United is on the horizon, and here are three key players that deserve a start following their performance against the Cherries.
