Firing blanks again

With Charlie Austin’s strike waved away for a foul on the Newcastle goalie, Southampton have officially gone five league games without scoring. This is the first time this has happened since 2001, which only highlights how poor the Saints are in front of goal at the moment.

Considering it’s unlikely for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to add to his goal tally of two so far, Danny Ings has been the Saints’ only reliable scorer so far and even he now only has three in nine – an average goal-to-game ratio at best.

Failing to score against tougher teams like Liverpool can be excused but Newcastle have frankly been terrible so far this campaign so for Southampton to once again fire blanks really is concerning. It’s unlikely they’ll do much damage against Manchester City next Sunday meaning we could be looking at six matches – and around two months – without scoring in the league. That’s relegation form.
