Southampton were totally embarrassed yesterday afternoon as they slumped to a 6-1 defeat to an impressive Manchester City side.

The game was done and dusted before the 20-minute mark, as by that point the champions had made it 3-0 without much reply from the Saints. Pep Guardiola’s side were comfortable and strolled through the game without having to leave second gear, as Mark Hughes’ side were totally swept aside.

A Wesley Hoedt own goal opened the scoring with barely six minutes on the clock, while replays confirmed that if the Dutchman hadn’t of stuck a leg out Raheem Sterling would’ve been flagged for offside anyway.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva put the game to bed with goals in the 12th and 18th minutes respectively, before Danny Ings won and converted a spot kick to break Southampton’s barren run in front of goal.

Sterling then went on to get a brace either side of half-time before he selflessly set up teammate Leroy Sane allowing the German to get his name of the score-sheet in the dying embers.

Next up is a tough game against a Watford side who started the season really strongly – it remains unclear whether Hughes ill be in charge.

But what three match takeaways can be drawn from a dark afternoon for the football club?
