Southampton were architects of their own downfall again on Saturday and gifted a crucial three Premier League points to Cardiff City.

With the game a scrappy but even affair and a couple of chances for either side, it was Jannik Vestergaard’s scuffed backpass that saw Calum Paterson claim the match deciding 16 minutes from time.

After having just two days with his new side ahead of the clash, Ralph Hasenhuttl must now be realising the true extent of the task he has been issued with.

Safety is still very much achievable for Saints with less than half of the season played, but they must stop making it so hard for themselves to get the points that they need.

A better equipped side will likely emerge at St Mary’s to face Arsenal next weekend as a truly testing December gets up and running.
