Another defensive calamity from the Southampton defence saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City yesterday afternoon.

An underhit backpass from Jannik Vestergaard gave home striker Calum Paterson the chance to advance on goal and roll the ball past Alex McCarthy.

The result saw Saints drop a place to 19th and they are now three points from Burnley in 17th.

After a limited time with his new side, it would be foolish to say that Ralph Hasenhuttl has been able to work with his players anywhere near enough yet.

Next week’s game against Arsenal will give a better indication of the ability of the team to fight as a collective to get out of their current mess.
