Southampton vs Arsenal: Premier League – Opposition Threats
By Harry Tizard
Lucas Torreira
Usually playing in partnership with another holding midfielder in the Arsenal setup, Torreira is a key player in the gunners system.
With Arsenal playing at a very high intensity under new manager Unai Emery, the Uruguayan plays in a very similar way to that of Chelsea’s Ngolo Kante. His main job is to win the ball back in the midfield through strong challenges and interceptions through high pressing, and then feeding the ball to a teammate to start an attack.
With Southampton being very carless in possession at times, especially when going through the middle of the pitch, Torreira will play a pivotal part in Arsenals engine room to win back the ball to either start an attack or pounce on misplaced passes high up the field.
Although attacking is not his main job, the former Sampdoria man has scored twice in his last three league games-including the fourth gunners goal in the North London derby-and should be watched out for due to his tendency to make late surging runs into the box that failed to get picked up.
