Huddersfield 1-3 Southampton: Premier League – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Danny Ings, Striker – 8
Danny Ings has an interesting striker role, as he was seen dropping all the way into left back on occasion to pick up the ball. He must really be taking to this idea of “freedom” within the front three. However, Ings did have some creative play in the midfield which built up to the first goal, suggesting that dropping deep is by design.
The Southampton striker brought his goal tally up to 8 with the penalty he earned, and calmly slotted home. Although, he was first off the pitch after some intense pressing, so let’s hope he is OK for Thursday.
Michael Obafemi, Striker – 8
Michael Obafemi made his return from injury and scored his first ever Premier League goal, becoming the youngest player ever to score in a Southampton kit.
A few moments earlier, Jan Vestergaard put the youngster in on goal, but he flashed the ball wide. However, Obafemi calmly slotted home his goal from a Nathan Redmond pass, just outside of the six yard box. He nearly made it a brace, creating a breakaway from midfield, but was denied by Jonas Lossl.
It was a fine cameo from Obafemi, and pairing with Redmond up front, the combined pace was dangerous. It would not be surprising to see him feature frequently for Southampton during the festive fixtures.
Mario Lemina, Centre-Midfielder – 7
The return of Mario Lemina is a welcomed site, and with Hojbjerg suspended midweek it is just in time.
The Gabon International had only missed two games this season, one for suspension, and one for injury, but he was back and flying around the field as a sub to close out the game. No moments to note, but it is obvious that Hasenhuttl wants him to join the attack which is exciting to think about with his level of creativity.
Jack Stephens, Right Wing-Back – 5
Stephens came on late for Jan Valery who was a bit of a liability on a yellow card. His impact was limited by his minutes, but he had enough time to pick up a yellow of his own!
