Southampton just weren’t able to match a motivated Manchester City on Sunday and eventually fell to a 3-1 defeat.
First-half efforts from David Silva, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sergio Aguero and a James Ward-Prowse own-goal completed the scoring before half-time and Saints weren’t able to fight their way back in the second period.
A clear game-plan from Ralph Hasenhuttl had the potential to work but two late lapses in concentration allowed the contest to be won before the break.
Saints tried to press the City backline but the visitors’ supreme ability on the ball proved to be too much.
