Shane Long

The often criticized “striker” came to the Saints rescue on Saturday, forcing a penalty and then scoring a massive goal when the game had just turned in favor of the Foxes.

The goal just before half time turned up as the game winner, but was even more impactful than a game sheet would describe. Yan Valery had just taken his second yellow card of the match, putting the team down to 10 men, while Leicester were already on the front foot. Down 0-1 you could feel the Foxes were pressing hard for a goal before the half, which likely would have decided the game. However, Shane Long made something out of absolutely nothing with an individual effort that may be a lasting memory as the turning point of the 2018-19 campaign.

Shane Long has struggled for goals, and his critics let him know it, constantly. As soon as Charlie Austin was handed his suspension, Southampton supporters went to social media voicing their dismay with his default inclusion in Saturday’s starting eleven.

However, that is what makes this goal all the more impressive. Against all odds, a hard-working professional, who embodies his manager’s belief that success is earned, plays his most impactful game as a Saint since the EFL Cup semi-final.  Then goes out and gives his match jersey to the mascot who rightfully predicted his favourite player would help win the game in a 2-1 victory.

Well done Mr. Long.
