Leicester City 1-2 Southampton: Premier League – Three Key Players
By Erik Franzo
Jannik Vestergaard
This selection will come with some debate as Jan Bednarek may have been equally or more impressive with a few blocks against Leicester. However, the development and renewed confidence Jannik Vestergaard displayed in the victory gives him the nod in this article.
Vestergaard used his height to win countless aerial balls which may have been the main reason he was originally brought in. He even absorbed the impact of an absolute rocket from a Leicester City strike late in the game, but continued to throw his body at everything.
Since his Cardiff City error, which should be forgiven at this point, Vestergaard has put in two of his best games against Chelsea and Leicester City, and is now looking like a true PL centre-back. There is no coincidence they have come under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl who has spoken highly of Vestergaard’s character in response to his mistake.
Some Saints fans were quick to write him off, citing lack of pace and agility, but Vestergaard has clear fight in him, and has endeared himself to his managers and fans after Saturday’s match.
