Southampton gave away yet another two goal lead to Derby County in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.  Ultimately getting knocked out of the competition via penalties by the Championship side.

The Saints appeared to be in cruise control after two quick goals in the second half.  Stuart Armstrong headed home a rebounded attempt from Shane Long, and Nathan Redmond deftly chipped the keeper after an excellent penetrating pass from Jack Stephens.

However, Southampton were not able to complete the heroics from the weekend with Leicester City.  A set piece on the corner of the eighteen fooled Angus Gunn, as it bounced untouched into the far corner.  Derby took control of the game from there and found an equaliser on a headed cross just six minutes later by Martyn Waghorn.

Extra time was fairly open, with chances on both sides.  None better than Nathan Redmond’s opportunity, being led in to the box by an Oriol Romeu counter attack.  Although, the Saints’ starlet was unable repeat his first finish, which may have been an omen for later in the game.

Mohamed Elyounoussi was given another chance to impress his boss and could have proven his worth with a game winner, but swung and missed on a Slattery cross.  Penalties were forced with both teams deadlocked after extra time, and Derby County struck first and last hitting all five penalties to send them into the FA Cup fourth round.

There were some quality performances from the Southampton players regardless of the loss.  Here are our player ratings from the midweek cup tie.
