Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

Was bold in giving Tyreke Johnson a start at wing-back and gave Kayne Ramsay a second start at right centre-back.  Used his trusted partnership of Ward-Prowse and Romeu take control of the game, and they did very well.  Changed the system at half, putting Redmond on and removing Johnson on a yellow.  However, will need to find an answer to his team relinquishing leads.

Angus Gunn, Goalkeeper – 6

Made all the saves he should have made, and it would be harsh to criticize him for the first goal.  However, he was no where close to saving the five Derby penalties, and that is what most Saints fans will judge him on in the end.

Cedric Soares, Wing-back – 6

Started as the right wing-back and then had to shift to his weaker left after half.  First half crossing was poor, missing a couple real opportunities to hit attackers in the box.  Still worked very hard and defended soundly, other than getting nut-megged for a yellow, which led to the first Derby goal.

Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-back – 8.5

Coming off a huge match against Leicester, Vestergaard put in a strong shift. Was really good in defence, his passing was strong, and how about that penalty? Truly coming into his own and brimming with confidence at the moment.

Jack Stephens, Centre-back – 6.5

Was sloppy in possession at times, but wanted to make things happen going forward. Slipped Redmond in for the second goal, and it was a high-quality spot. Could have recognized the runner on the second Derby goal between himself and Ramsay.  Swept up well, cutting out passing lanes, but is rather reckless in his decision-making.

Kayne Ramsay, Centre-back/Right-back – 7.5

A very solid game from the Southampton youngster.  He is big, strong, fast, and adapted to a position change at the half. Lost the runner for the second goal, but over the 120 minutes he showed a lot of quality.  Cramped up very late and had to leave the game, but it looks like he has a bright future in the senior side.

Tyreke Johnson, Left Wing-back – 6

Displayed his pace in pressing and delivered two of the best crosses in the match.  The second should have been finished by either Shane Long or Stuart Armstrong.  Was removed at half because he was on a yellow and Hasenhuttl likely had visions of Valery’s Leicester City red.
