Midfielders

Oriol Romeu, Centre-midfielder – 10

Southampton does not have a shot in this game without his performance.  Another all-around gem controlling midfield and breaking up Derby attacks.  Put in on a plate for Redmond to score the game winner, even though he missed.  Not sure how to criticize his play, and only hope after 120 minutes he can play again on Saturday.

James Ward-Prowse, Centre-midfielder – 9

Very strong game from Ward-Prowse, coming into his own under Hasenhuttl.  Really good passing and link up play with every player around him.  Seeing development in a player that has been in a Saints kit a  while is a lot of fun.

Mohamed Elyounoussi, Attacking-midfielder – 5.5

Works so hard to make a difference, but did not take his chances in front of goal.  With a minute left in extra time Slattery put it on his foot and he flat out missed.  Did chip the ball to the back post that led to the first Saints goal, but still trying to find his place in the team.  Pressing, and pressing way too hard, but don’t give up on him yet.

Stuart Armstrong, Attacking-midfielder – 6

Despite his goal which put Southampton in the lead, Armstrong did not have a great game.  His first half in particular was just off.  Missing passes (Cedric switch on the wing) and a great chance to score (rebound from Long’s shot). Was removed in extra time, likely for tired legs, and will just chalk this one up as a day where his touch was lost.
