Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 9

Hasenhuttl made seven changes from his team which played 120 minutes against Derby midweek. He expressed his happiness to have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg back and ready for action, and wasted no time deploying him.  Asked a lot of Ward-Prowse and Romeu who played the entire game midweek, but they did not disappoint.  This manager appears to be the real deal and has brought enthusiasm to a fan base that was on the brink of giving up hope.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 8

Back in the side after Angus Gunn took the position between the posts against Derby.  Not called into action until the 48th minute with an underrated nice save on Sigurdsson.  Attacked the ball with some good clearing punches late on.  Cannot be faulted for the late goal, as no one would have saved it through the crowd in front of him.

Matt Targett, Left Wing-back – 7

Started pretty well running the left flank.  Looked for Redmond early with quality forward passes and did his best trying to keep up running alongside of him.  Although, the left back took a knock attempting to thwart an Everton counter-attack and was forced to exit after just 34 minutes.

Jannik Vestergaard, Left Centre-back – 8

It is all about confidence, and you can see him brimming with it as he walks onto the pitch.  The investment this summer is turning into a nice coup under Hasenhuttl as his defence improves every single game.  A goal from a set piece is coming!

Jack Stephens, Centre-back – 9

Unbelievable run with 10 minutes to go and nearly sealed it with a header from the ensuing corner , but it flashed just wide.  Rating is based on Richarlson’s performance today, which was non-existent.  Fans question his defending at times, but today he was very good.

Jan Bednarek, Right Centre-back – 10

Made a couple huge blocks early on, most memorable, the one on Saints’ target Ademola Lookman from 18 yards out.  Completed an amazing lofted pass to set up Danny Ings for a first time strike.  Fell on his shoulder, but shrugged it off to finish the game. Absolute beast today who did not put a foot wrong.

Yan Valery, Right Wing-back – 8

His straight line attacking style and crossing can improve, but man this kid has poise.  Recovering from a red card two matches ago he was completely unfazed and competed until the final whistle.  He may just be the right wing-back for years to come.  Especially because Liverpool have that position covered.
