Southampton must keep Danny Ings fit

Although local boy Danny Ings did not score yesterday, he was at the heart of much of the excellent build up play which was evident from the home side throughout the game. The Winchester born striker was tireless in his running and there is no doubting that the team look considerably more potent when he is present

His persistence in chasing lost causes was commendable and were it not for some excellent work by Jordan Pickford, he would have scored from a snap volley in the first half. Ings also nearly caused Andre Gomes to toe poke into his own net after a fine piece of industry left the Everton midfielder no choice but to intervene.  On that occasion, the post came to Everton’s rescue with Pickford well beaten.

Ings turned provider for the second goal with a lovely weighted through ball to Nathan Redmond. On this occasion, the backtracking Digne inadvertently poked the ball past his despairing keeper from distance, in what will be considered one of the more bizarre own goals this season. With 7 goals to date this season even in spite of several injuries, Ings will be the man that Hasenhuttl will be relying on to fire Saints to safety.
