Southampton 2-1 Everton: Premier League – Three Match Takeaways
Redmond is finally beginning to fulfil his potential
With 5 goals in his last 8 matches, Nathan Redmond is looking like the player that Southampton invested approximately £10 million in obtaining from Norwich in 2016. Despite a series of frustratingly inconsistent performances and some ferocious criticism being aimed his way by sections of the Southampton fanbase, Redmond has retained belief in his ability which is visibly starting to pay off.
What is evident is that he needed a manager who believed in him and since Hasenhuttl arrived, Redmond has been the key player for the Saints. His pace and ability to turn either way caused Everton real problems at St Mary’s and he was unlucky not to trouble the score-sheet with a first half shot which brushed the outside of the post. Although Digne got the last touch for the second goal, it was Redmond’s endeavour and lightening speed which was instrumental in inviting the error.
If he could be more clinical in front of goal, Redmond could be a vital cog in a Southampton renaissance in the coming years. Tying the likes of Redmond, Hojbjerg, Bednarek and Ward-Prowse down to new contracts should be an absolute priority for the Southampton hierarchy to ward off the vultures which will almost certainly circle in the near future.
