Saints in talks for potential Cedric replacement

A report from the Daily Mail states that Saints are targeting Genk right-back Joakim Maehle in the final week of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old potential arrival at St Mary’s could hint at the departure of current full-back Cedric Soares, who has been out of favour since Ralph Hasenhuttl’s appointment as manager.

A £15m move to Everton for the Portuguese international had been rumoured and could see him link up with his former boss at Sporting Lisbon in Marco Silva.

Maehle joined Genk from Aalborg in his homeland of Denmark for a fee of around £1.17m just 18 month ago but a larger fee would be expected if Saints want to bring him to England.

He would certainly fit well into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s 3-4-3 system as he can also play as a wide-midfielder as well as at full-back.
