Southampton: Hoedt joins La Liga side Celta Vigo on loan
The Dutch defender is joining teammate Sofiane Boufal at Celta Vigo for the remainder of the season and the Spanish side can purchase him after the season.
The club officially announced the move earlier today in a statement that was put out on the team website that you can read here.
The move has been rumored for some time now and it was only a matter of time until it was officially announced. With the departure of the Centre-back it opens the door for a new one to be brought in without the worry of the position being over crowded.
The Saints have been linked with several defenders this window but it does not look like they will be willing to overspend in the window and only looking to but if they consider the deal a good value.
Hasenhuttl, has said he wants youth, so I expect we will see a young defender be brought in that can develop under the Austrian and learn and adapt to his style of play for the future. In the meantime, the Saints will be getting Yoshida back soon and if the formation does not change he will likely be put back in the starting XI next to Bednarek and Vestergaard.
That will leave Jack Stephens as the other CB in the club in case one goes down with injury or suspension.
For Wesley Hoedt, this is probably the right move for his career. Since Hasenhuttl took over the club he has not seen the pitch and it did not look like he would be making his return to the starting lineup any time soon. Southampton’s defense has improved statistically since Hoedt has been dropped so this move benefits both the club and the player.
