Southampton need to close games out

Having dropped 17 points from winning positions this season, Southampton’s ability to self destruct needs addressing or else they could face the very real reality of relegation this season. No-one denies the positive impact Hasenhuttl has had since joining in December but it is imperative that he overturns the pattern of giving away late goals.

The Saints probably shaded it against Burnley but given that they gave away a late penalty and should have conceded another in the first half after Alex McCarthy’s clumsy collision with Barnes, there are fine margins in this league. As such, it is important that they learn to be clinical in seeing matches out.

Although they are in a similar predicament to Southampton, this is not a bad Burnley side and Turf Moor has been a difficult away day for a number of years now. Had he been offered a draw at the start of the day, Hasenhuttl would probably have taken it but that solitary point will now feel like a loss for all those involved.
