Southampton were forced to settle with a point after Nathan Redmond’s opening goal was equalised upon by Burnley in the dying moments of the game.

Burnley fans will feel like they deserved the draw, while Southampton fans feel completely undone.  Especially in a game where the Saints showed a far more attractive style of football and defended very well for 93 and a half minutes.

Ashley Barnes, who converted the penalty, was denied one in the first half after being taken out by Alex McCarthy.  A play, in which further review, showed the Burnley striker was wrongly booked for simulation.  However, the image above clearly shows a foul by Peter Crouch who forced Jack Stephens into the handball in the game’s final seconds.  So it appears referee Anthony Taylor equaled things out and both teams will be able to complain about the result.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was without Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who took a clash to the head midweek versus Crystal Palace.  He also gave Jame Ward-Prowse a start over Yan Valery at right wing-back, after scoring there Wednesday night.  Stuart Armstrong was the only other change to the Austrian manager’s side who went with his preferred 3-5-2 shape.

Regardless of the draw, Saints fans have to be pleased with the uptick in performance after a rather slow start against Palace.  Here are the three difference makers in the Southampton side against Burnley.
