The Austrian has given an update on the defender, saying Bertrand is still working on his fitness and able to play a full 90 minutes.

Back in December, Bertrand underwent a “minor back operation” and was expected to be out for two weeks or so. We are now in February and it has become clear the recovery process is taking longer than expected.

“It doesn’t make sense to bring any player on the bench if he is unable to play 90 minutes in the moment,” Hasenhuttl said and I could not agree more. Patience is a virtue for both the player, manager, and supporters.

Some, have seen this for reason for concern but it takes time to not only return from back surgery but this is also the Englishman’s first time training to prepare for the rigors of playing under Hasenhuttl’s system. The intensity of his training sessions have been increasing and he is nearly ready to return to the pitch.

Once he is ready, should he start immediately or should he work his way back into the starting XI slowly? I believe, and it seems like Hasenhuttl is waiting until Bertrand can play a full 90, that the former Captain will be in the starting lineup as soon as he is ready to return to the pitch.

Targett, has played well enough and has shown moments of brilliance but Bertrand would be in upgrade. There have been times, Targett has struggled either defensively or offensively and the consistency of a proven Premier League player will be a welcome sight. Not only is Bertrand the better player but he will also fit the Austrian’s style well. He loves bombing forward and is very comfortable on the ball.

I would not be surprised to see him return for the match in the Emirates and have an immediate impact on the game
