Southampton 1-2 Cardiff City: Premier League – Player Ratings
Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Manager – Ralph Hasenhuttl – 4
For the first time since arriving at the club, Hasenhuttl is under real scrutiny after failing to pick up wins from the last three games against Cardiff, Palace and Burnley. No-one disputes the fantastic impact the Austrian has had since arriving at the club but the gaffer did not get it right against Cardiff.
The decision to play three centre backs against a team who struggle to score prolifically was questionable and the decision to start Shane Long did not pay dividends. Hasenhuttl was too slow to deploy his substitutes but in his defence, there was a lack of real quality on the bench.
Goalkeeper – Alex McCarthy – 5
Although questions are starting being asked of the England international, the Southampton keeper was left woefully exposed by his defence. Gunn may be the long term replacement but it would be naive to suggest that McCarthy is the root of Southampton’s defensive problems. The harsh reality is that the Southampton defence (with a couple of exceptions) is not good enough.
Right Wing-Back – Yan Valery – 6
Wasn’t the worst player out there and had a couple of chances to score but if that is the highest praise that can be offered, it doesn’t say much. There is some undeniable talent there but not remotely ready to be playing this level every week yet.
Left Wing-Back – Ryan Bertrand – 5
Having Bertrand back in the Southampton ranks was a reassuring presence but after this performance, there will be questions about whether he is fully match fit yet. His ability going forward has been missed and even half fit, he looks a world better than Targett.
Centre-Back – Jan Bednarek – 5
For once, Bednarek was not at the races and looked jaded. He has been one of the few bright points this season but did not look his usual comfortable self.
Centre-Back – Jannik Vestergaard – 5
Although the Dane has improved immeasurably since Hasenhuttl’s arrival, he did not look as solid as he has has in recent weeks. Vestergaard looks better with Yoshida in the team.
Centre-Back – Jack Stephens – 6
His late goal elevated his score from a 5/10 and as usual, he posed a threat in the opposition box. Normally good on the ball, he was careless in possession against the Bluebirds and still makes too many mistakes. The inevitable question follows – is he really Premier League quality?
