The Spaniard has had a new lease on life under Hasenhuttl and Southampton seem to have gotten back their player of the year from just a few seasons ago.
Romeu, under Hughes, was a missing man. He looked a shell of himself whenever he was on the pitch and was slowly phased out of the team and even forced to train with the U23’s at one point. Then, when Hughes was sacked and Hasenhuttl was implemented, a flip was switched.
He was back with the team and playing at a level again that won him the hearts of all the Saint supporters. His passing has been solid with a pass success rate at 80% and averaging just under 35 passes a game.
On the defensive side, he is making 2.7 tackles a match, 1.6 interceptions, and 1.4 clearances. Those are solid numbers for a midfielder and an enforcer in the middle of the park and something we have missed for some time.
Hojbjerg and Lemina are more creative players and like going forward where Romeu can sit back and make tackles and regain possession in the defensive half.
The 27-year-old will continue to be a key piece to the team moving forward. Not only is he a solid player he is also a leader on the pitch. The younger guys will look to him on the pitch for direction and guidance and he will make sure they are in the right mindset and are executing the game plan Hasenhuttl has implemented.
He is by no means the flashiest player nor will he make many highlight reels but he is a rock in the midfield and puts his head down and goes to work week-in and week-out.
