Southampton shot themselves in the foot on Sunday, giving up two early goals at the Emirates, allowing Arsenal to cruise to victory.

Jack Stephens is nobody’s favourite player right now and Ralph Hasenhuttl has some explaining to do after Sunday’s loss.  The manner in which the goals were conceded and the lack of attacking options are consistent themes.  To make matters worse, they are enhanced by the fact that Saints have their biggest game of the season on Wednesday night at St. Mary’s, hosting Fulham.

The toughest pill to swallow may be the injury to Michael Obafemi, as it has been deemed a “disaster” by Hasenhuttl.  The young striker was being counted on to support Nathan Redmond with his pace, but re-injured his hamstring after just 15 minutes on the pitch.

Matt Targett and Yan Valery flashed some ability to go forward, but one has to wonder if their wing back roles are contributing to successful team tactics.  Each player attempted shots on target, with the former unlucky to score in the final five minutes.  However, expecting these two to create opportunities is a dangerous game within a team battling relegation.

The quick turn around for Wednesdays game at least gives fans the opportunity to forget Sunday’s performance.  However, with 15 days between games, and a trip to Tenerife it is very difficult to not be let down by the loss.

Here are the Southampton player ratings from their trip to Arsenal.
