Angus Gunn

Gunn’s adventurous opening five minutes set the tone for the entire match.  United could have grabbed the game by the throat, but the Saints’ keeper made three huge saves, including two on Romelu Lukaku.

Starting his third game in a week’s time, it appears Gunn’s confidence level has him ahead of Alex McCarthy.  He was very aggressive, almost too aggressive off his line at times, but he is bringing a strong mentality to each match.

The three goals conceded were all finding the back of the net, regardless of the Premier League keeper wearing the gloves.  The penalty save on Paul Pogba was the icing on the cake, throwing his legs out to deny the Frenchman trying to go down the middle.

It is always positive to have competition at the keeper position, and right now Gunn is in the lead.  However, it is likely by a small margin, and comes down to the confidence he is showing on and off the pitch.  It will be interesting to see if he continues to get starts down the stretch, with Ralph Hasenhuttl likely counting on the team he trusts, and that is a clear eleven players at the moment.
