According to the Daily Mirror (17/03, page 72) Southampton are interested in Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings after his Aston Villa spell ends.

The 26-year-old Central Defender has made 9 appearances for Aston Villa in the Championship. He is a defender who is comfortable on the ball and can launch an attack from the back.

He is averaging 52.8 passes per match and 7.6 long balls and that is exactly the type of Centre-back Hasenhuttl wants and needs in his style of play.

dark. Next. Saints’ Premier League clash with Watford given new date

He is also defensively solid as well and has been averaging a 7.1 match rating according to Whoscored.com.

The move would make sense for Southampton because as of right now they lack depth defensively and Mings would be a great addition to the defensive ranks and would not cost a fortune.

Aston Villa, will be keen to hold onto the defender, especially if they do manage to get promoted to the Premier League, and have an agreement with Bournemouth that allows them to match any offer that is made for Mings.

So, in the event they gain promotion there is a good chance Villa will be able to hold onto Mings unless Hasenhuttl can convince the Englishman to come over to the South Coast. That is also dependent on Southampton staying up and if they do not manage that we can say goodbye to Mings and many other transfer targets.

This summer is lining up to be an interesting one if the Saints stay up in the Premier League. Hasenhuttl, will want to build the squad he wants so I expect plenty of signings this summer and an exciting season next year. Not many matches left in the season and with every match counting, Saint fans are in for an exciting few months.
