There’s a place for Long under Hasenhuttl

No-one divides the Southampton fanbase like Shane Long. The Irishman has been at Saints nearly 5 years now and at the age of 32, he may not have that many years left at the top. He has hardly been prolific at Southampton and certainly through the middle, he has lacked the impact that many fans demand.

Yet under Hasenhuttl, Long’s attributes, including his work ethic, pace and surprisingly good aerial ability, have been utilised more effectively than many of the Austrian manager’s predecessors. Long was superb after coming on around the hour mark against Wolves. His pace posed a real nuisance for a static Wolves defence and his goal was smartly taken following committed play from Yoshida.

If used as an impact substitute and providing he remains fit, there is no reason why Long cannot continue to contribute under Hasenhuttl next season. With back to back league goals for the first time since May 2016, Long’s confidence is high and with winnable games to come, there is no reason he cannot add to his tally.
