Saints 4-2 Newcastle, 15th August 1999

Saints’ third game of the season produced a convincing win over the Magpies at the Dell.

Visiting striker Alan Shearer opened the scoring in the first-half but Saints were 2-1 ahead following goals from Hassan Kachloul and Marian Pahars.

Kachloul’s second and a superb volley from the club’s future manager Mark Hughes made it four, although Gary Speed would get Newcastle’s second late on.

Saints would go on to finish in 16th place in the league after accumulating 44 points.
