A hat-trick from Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez saw Southampton fall to a 3-1 defeat at St James’s Park earlier.

Two first-half strikes from Perez had seen the hosts 2-0 ahead at half-time, but Saints pushed for an equaliser following Mario Lemina’s placed effort.

However, Perez wrapped up the win and his treble with just five minutes left to kill any hope of a comeback.

The result sees Newcastle safe from relegation, whilst Saints will still need to pick up some points from their final four league games – starting at Watford on Tuesday.
