Southampton must be more clinical in front of goal

Although Southampton were beaten at St James’ Park, there were opportunities for Saints to steal something from the game. Yoshida was amongst the worst culprits, especially with his miscued volley in the second half.

There are goals in this Southampton team but what they have lacked since Rickie Lambert’s departure is a clinical striker who can score 15 plus a season. With the summer looming, it seems logical that Hasenhuttl will be on the hunt for a striker or attacking midfielder who can add goals to the team.

Interestingly, there has been a lack of goals from the defensive line this year, which given the height of the likes of Vestergaard, Bednarek etc, seems a wasted opportunity. There is no lack of quality in the deliveries from Ward-Prowse but there has been just one solitary goal from the Southampton centre backs collectively this season.
