For the second match running, Southampton threw away two points in a lively encounter against fellow South Coast side Bournemouth.

With Cardiff losing away at Fulham, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be delighted to reach mathematical safety, an impressive achievement given the precarious situation he inherited from predecessor Mark Hughes. Confirmation of another season in top flight will come as a relief to many fans who surely feared the worst earlier on the season.

Goals for Shane Long, James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett were not sufficient to beat Eddie Howe’s side, who responded through a strike from Gosling and a brace from the in form Callum Wilson.
