Goals from Shane Long, James Ward-Prowse, and Matt Targett, proved enough for a dramatic draw against Bournemouth and with-it Premier League survival.

Fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief, whilst looking forward to next season’s top-flight campaign. Matt Targett’s first Premier League goal and his sides third on the day, proved just enough to secure a point against Bournemouth and, with it, safety.

While supporters will surely have enjoyed the six goal thriller ‘during the not quite derby ‘, they must also have been tearing their hair out after witnessing the same old problems persist.

Not only did the Saints surrender an early lead to a previously inept cherries side but could only watch as the opposition took the lead just after the half hour mark. Shane Long buried the opener but spurned the chance to retake the lead from point-blank range.

On the plus side, Saints pressing style posed, plenty of problems.

Both sides had long spells of dominance during the game and serve to exploit each other’s weaknesses. Although the two managers will feel that they should have triumphed with some golden opportunities past up, the draw was a fair result.

Southampton will feel disappointed about yet another late concession of three points, but that all important point allows license to rejoice in the fact that We Are Staying up!

In this week’s takeaways we examine the summer business to be done, as well as the relegation basement battle between our now former rivals Cardiff and Brighton.

Here are the key takeaways from Southampton 3 Bournemouth 3.
