Yan Valery

A key player is not always a positive presence for his team, an early mistake can set the tone for a poor afternoon. Such was the case for Yan Valery.

During the season the Frenchman has gradually grown into his role as a starting Right Back, but with under 20 minutes gone at the London Stadium he made an error in judgment.

The Full-Back under minimal pressure, attempted to pass the ball off. Regrettably, the 20-year-old woefully under hit the ball, allowing Mark Noble to take charge from Southampton’s side of the centre circle.

Noble managed an exquisite pass to the feet of Arnautović. The Striker ran into the box before Cooley firing past the helpless Forster.

It won’t be the biggest mistake Valery will make in his career, but it meant his side was always on the back foot. Saints had struggled to offer much against the hosts, and the careless mistake only serve to put them in an even deeper hole.

The season now effectively over, Yan is guilty of no great sin, save for perhaps on the beach syndrome.
