According to a new report from the mirror, Liverpool are keen on bringing in Southampton’s Alex McCarthy as the new backup to Brazilian, Alisson.

Alex McCarthy started the past season as the Saints number 1 but found himself on the outs as he lost his spot to Angus Gunn after Hasenhuttl took over as manager.

Klopp, now has his eyes on the 29-year-old keeper as a backup to Alisson Becker. McCarthy would be the 7th player purchased by Liverpool from Southampton since 2014 and would be a considerable upgrade from Simon Mignolet.

With Gunn looking like the keeper moving forward and Hasenhuttl wanting to go young, this is probably a smart move for both the club and player to move onto another opportunity.

Undoubtedly, after making his international debut this season, McCarthy will draw a pretty decent price and it will be a good bit of business. Especially, if Gunn turns into the keeper we all think he can be.

It is very unlikely McCarthy will challenge Becker for the starting position but it will give the Englishman the chances to play in cup matches and even some Champions League matches throughout the season.

If McCarthy leaves and Forster follows the Saints will be in the market for a new backup keeper themselves. It will be good to get Forster’s large contract off the books but it will leave the club thin at the keeper position. They have already missed out on the Polish keeper Dragowski but it seems that move may not materialize.

This will be an interesting transfer window. Hasenhuttl has said he does not want to bring in any players older than 24-years of age and may only add 2-3 more players this window.
