Jean-Philippe Mateta

Another young and promising striker to be linked to St Mary’s is Mainz’s Mateta.

A report from L’Equipe (via Daily Echo) early this month suggested that Saints and Newcastle United were looking to bring the 21-year-old to the Premier League.

However, both clubs were dealt a blow more recently when Mateta signed a new four-year deal that is sure to hike up his price.

The France Under-21 international impressed in his first Bundesliga season in 2018/19 with 14 league goals as Mainz finished 12th.
