Southampton: Five defenders who have been linked with a summer move to Saints

Cahill is a free agent after leaving Chelsea at the end of his contract at the end of June.

The Express reported back in May that Saints were chasing the vastly experienced centre-back along with West Ham, Sheffield United and Derby County.

Cahill’s leadership qualities would be most welcome at St Mary’s but at 33-year-old, he is unlikely to fit into the current recruitment plan under Hasenhuttl.

He was released by Chelsea at the end of the 2018/19 season after playing just 562 minutes in all competitions since last August.
