Southampton: Striker Charlie Austin offered to Newcastle
After an alleged blow-up with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Southampton are as keen as ever to get the striker off their books and out of the club.
According to new reports, the 30-year-old striker is being offered at a discounted rate to Newcastle who are looking to bolster their attack. The club is not necessarily looking to buy an older striker but the hope now is that the cheaper price tag will be enough for Newcastle to bite and purchase the Englishman.
The out-of-favor striker only has one deal left and has said he is keen on seeing the end of it at Southampton but that no longer seems like the likely scenario and if he wishes to play top-flight football this coming season this might be his last chance to do so.
Not many teams in the Premier League are in the market for a Charlie Austin type striker, who relies on service from his teammates to create his chances and score. But, with that said, Austin is still a serviceable striker and should attract some interest from some of the smaller clubs in the league.
Austin, has had a tumultuous time at Southampton. It started out strong with that winning goal at Old Trafford in his debut but his time was marked by injury and a lack of consistency. He scored 16 league goals for the club in 71 league appearances.
With just over two weeks until the new season is upon us the club needs to start selling players it does not see fit into the squad. The first team squad currently has 29 players and Hasenhuttl has said he would like to get it down to around 22 so there is some work to be done. Hopefully the next time we are writing about Charlie Austin it is commenting on his sale to another club.
