The summer transfer window closes for English clubs at 5pm on Thursday evening, and it remains to be seen whether Southampton will get any late business done.

Che Adams, Moussa Djenepo and Danny Ings (loan made permanent) have arrived so far but a defender would also be needed if an ideal player became available.

This would be dependent on Saints shifting some fringe players out and freeing up space in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad before the deadline.

As the clock ticks down for club’s looking to do last-minute deals, Saints Marching will be rolling out articles from our contributors on Saints’ window so far.

First up: Ed Waugh!

Q1) Saints fans are clearly wanting an extra defender to be brought in before 5pm on Thursday. Is that the only area that the squad needs strengthening in your eyes?

Easily yes, we have a lot of depth in all positions even including in defence; however we lack a player with dominant presence at centre-half.

Jan Bednarek is the first name on the team sheet when it comes to selecting a partnership at the back, and whilst Jannik Vestergaard and Maya Yoshida could have stand out seasons; a new addition would be the difference in pushing for a top ten, maybe even 8th league finish.
