Saints mistakes lead to Barnes goals

Burnley raced into the lead after a brace from striker Ashley Barnes, but Saints didn’t cover themselves in glory with either goal.

A long ball was hooked forward in the lead up to the first goal and Jannik Vestergaard misjudged the flight of the spinning ball. The Saints defence were too slow to recover form that moment and Barnes took full advantage.

The second saw full-back Erik Pieters advance forward to an early crossing position and bend a ball to the back post.

He produced a good delivery, but all Barnes had to do was to jog into the gap between Ryan Bertrand and Jannik Vestergaard unchallenged to volley home.

With the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to face next week, improvements must be made in the quality of Saints’ defending.
