A spirited Southampton performance was not enough to see off the European champions in an end to end encounter at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Although Liverpool created numerous chances in an improved second half performance, Southampton remained in the game and had opportunities to snatch unlikely point in the final minutes.

Although Saints are yet to register any points this season, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be encouraged by the endeavour on display from his team. With a little more cutting edge up top, Southampton would have taken something out of a fairly even match against a Liverpool side tired from their midweek exploits in the Super Cup.
