Clinical Liverpool show wasteful Saints the way forward

There were no shortage of chances for Southampton against a surprisingly open Liverpool defence but once again, Saints failed to make the most of the openings created, with Yoshida, Adams and Ings all missing gilt edged opportunities. Substitute Ings did well to pull a goal back, with his relentless pressing causing Adrian to make an error but the Southampton striker will reflect on an unfortunate miss late on, which would have equalised for Saints.

Djenepo looked lively from the bench and with Redmond linking up well with Bertrand, there was plenty of positive forward play to reflect upon for Ralph Hasenhuttl. New signing Che Adams was fast and industrious throughout the game but wasn’t able to capitalise on the openings which came his way. As with the Burnley game, it felt at times as if Adams was trying too hard to make something happen rather than trusting his striker instincts.

With Brighton to come next, it will be interesting to see whether Djenepo will be granted an opportunity to impress from the outset. There is clearly a raw talent there which can be harnessed, which when coupled with Redmond’s pace and guile, could pose a handful for opposition defences.
