Manager and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

Opted to go with the 4-2-2-2 from the onset, benching Maya Yoshida and giving Ings a second start.  The team looked out of sorts in possession and Brighton took advantage far too often with 10 men.  Gets a higher rating because he went for the kill and Djenepo and Boufal paid off.  A lot of fans would have expected Yoshida or Cedric later in the game, but the team held strong and earned three points.

Angus Gunn, Goalkeeper – 7

A clean sheet has to feel good, as it was a long time coming.  Wasn’t forced into anything spectacular, but commanded the ball in the air, and made the saves he should make.  One thing he needs to improve are his goal kicks, they take forever, and he still puts it out of play!

Yan Valery, Right-Back – 4

Lucky to come out of this game without serious injury following a terrible tackle by Andone.  Never got into the game and after the tackle he never looked right.  Maybe the ridiculous booing from Brighton fans got to him?

Kevin Danso, Left-Back – 6

It was the much anticipated debut of Kevin Danso, replacing the injured Ryan Bertrand.  Looked a little uncomfortable on the left side, but took up good defensive position.  He showed no fear in aerial challenges and held his own, regardless of being a little reckless dribbling out of the back.

Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 6.5

Did well in the first half considering he was dealing with pacy forwards in Maupay and Andone.  Was very busy in the air, but conceded too many corners.  Lacked communication with Bednarek and got the team in trouble because of it, but a clean sheet is a clean sheet.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6.5

Put in a gutty performance considering how busy he was.  Brighton put a ton of pressure on the back four and Bednarek was a big reason they stood the test.  Got his hand stepped on by Angus Gunn, but gave everything and earned a clean sheet.
