Midfielders

James Ward-Prowse, Attacking-Midfielder – 6.5

His usual work ethic was on display, but took an early caution breaking up a counter-attack.  Corner kick service was quality, but nothing to show, although he did flash a couple free kicks over the bar.  Deserves credit for playing 40 minutes as the right wing-back.  May be one of Southampton’s most important players.

Oriol Romeu, Defensive Centre-Midfielder – 5

Was not his influential self in this one.  Protected the back line, but little in the passing game and his touch was off.  Still worked hard and helped secure the three points.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, Centre-Midfielder – 4

A very underwhelming first half with little of the ball, and too many turnovers. The second half he seemed to be late into everything, committing foul after foul and picking up a yellow.  His impact is in his leadership, and with Brighton’s performance, I am sure it contributed.  However, what you saw was far less than fans expect.

Nathan Redmond, Attacking-Midfielder – 7.5

By far the brightest Saint in the first half.  Had three long dribbling attacks, but just one ended in a shot.  Nearly put the game away on a counter-attack in the 63rd minute, clearly when he is most dangerous.  Got his reward for his effort, finishing a Boufal cross at the back post.
