Fulham vs Southampton: Carabao Cup – Opposition Threats
By Harry Tizard
Anthony Knockaert
The third man in the dangerous Fulham front three is Frenchman Anthony Knockaert. In similar fashion to previous man Ivan Cavaleiro, the Lily Whites were forced to bring in another attacker to due the fact they could not keep hold of certain players they had in the top division. In this case, Andre Schurrle, who scored six times last season, cut short his two year loan spell to return to parent club Borrussia Dortmund (and has now gone back out on loan, but to Russian side Spartak Moscow).
As a result, Knockart was brought in. On loan from Premier League side Brighton, Scott Parker has placed the 2016-17 Championship player of the year on the right hand side of the attack. Despite only scoring once so far this season with no assists to his name, his twenty three goals contributions in his last Championship season show that he is experienced at this level and is more than likely to kick on when he gets used to his surroundings.
When playing for the Seagulls, his partnership with Glen Murray was a pivotal part to the teams success. Knockaerts accurate crossing straight to seasoned striker Glen Murray was a large part in why they got promoted, with the Fulham faithful hoping for that sort of link up between the Frenchman and Aleksander Mitrovic. Not only this, but being installed on the right hand side will allow Knockaert to cut in onto his favoured left foot and release a curling shot – meaning the Saints defenders cannot allow him a yard of space.
Securing the loan signing of the former Leicester City man would very much be considered a coup for the club, with the winger an ever present player in the Premier League for Brighton, and at only twenty-seven, being able to get him on a permanent transfer would still see Fulham get the best out of him in the prime years of his career.
