Southampton: Rating Saints’ business in the summer transfer window

Permanent departures

As mentioned on the previous slide, it was well-documented that Saints wanted to sell some players to help raise the cash for their own signings. With this in mind, the permanent sales that they made were ideal.

Each of Matt Targett, Charlie Austin and Sam Gallagher departed to other English clubs for transfer fees, whilst Steven Davis and Jordy Clasie left on free transfers.

The former three were never going to be starters this season and so it can be seen as excellent business to get a combined total of just under £23m for them.

To get Davis and Clasie off the wage bill can also be seen as a positive move, whilst the only down side on the permanent sales is that more of the bunch on the next slide could have left…
